Z comes to Twizel.

Z is here!
On 26th March the Shell petrol station became a Z petrol station.
Shell petrol stations throughout New Zealand are gradually being renamed as Z petrol stations and this week it is Twizel's turn to be renamed.

Funny!!!

Forces Careers Bus Comes To Twizel

The Tri-Forces careers bus visited Twizel today.
The three armed forces are
the Army, the Navy and the Air Force.

We are waiting to go on the bus.
Miss Dockerty is with us.

We watched a video showing the Tri-Forces working.

There was a boat inside the bus.
The boat has got a steering wheel in it.
It was fun in the boat!

Guess what? A helicopter landed on the
School Sports field this morning.
The kindergarten children visited it!

Elaine's last day.

It was Elaine's last day on Monday.
We made a Farewell card for her.
Nexis gave her the card.
We will miss you, Elaine!

Underwater Mayfly

Mayfly

Do you think the Mayfly really did all of these things?

What amazing cases they make and carry around.

Lizards and Frogs

KP had some toy lizards,
but we didn't see any real ones.
She also had some toy frogs.
There aren't many frogs in or around Twizel,
but sometimes at night you can hear them.

Wildlife found in Twin Lakes

After we looked in Fraser Stream, we looked in Twin Lakes.
We used our nets to catch bugs and other wildlife.

Shelton's Mum caught an Upland Bully.
She was fast!
This is an 'Upland Bully.'
Nexis is looking for insects in the grass.
Dean and Jack are looking at bugs in a bucket.
"It was this long."\
We got lots of  'Water Boatmen.'
A close up of a 'Water Boatman.'
Can you see the Bully?

When we had finished looking at the wildlife,
we put it back in Twin Lakes.

Fraser Stream Wildlife.

After our ' Nature Trail" it was lunchtime.

We sat on rugs.
We put all of our rubbish back in our bags.

KP showed us a poster of
New Zealand Freshwater Invertebrates.

Then we got nets and went to the stream
to see what we could find.

We lifted rocks and looked underneath them.
This rock has a lot of Caddisflys on it.
Three of them are standing on end.
If fresh water has this type of Caddis in it,
it means the water quality is very good, with little pollution.

This rock has a lot of eggs under it.

This rock has 'Stonefly caddis.

The Stonefly builds a little case using tiny rocks
and sticks it on to a bigger stone.

This stone has Stonefly Cases on it ,
as well as little green eggs.
We carefully placed the rocks back in the river
where they came from.
Does anyone know what these are?
Robert found them.
Are they animal or vegetable?
They look as if something has hatched out of them.

We looked in our buckets to see what we had caught.

This is a Mayfly,

These are Caddisflies.

It was exciting looking at our discoveries!

This dish has a Mayfly, some Caddisflies and
a little Water Snail in it.

We tipped everything back into the water.
