Picnic at Lake Ruataniwha

The end of year whole school class picnic was held at
Lake Ruataniwha today.
(Taniwha is the Maori word for dragon,
and rua is the Maori word for two.)

Room 7 children went down to the lake in the school mini van and came back in a bus. It was the first time some children have been on a bus. The seats were comfortable.

We played in the lagoon.
The water was warm.
It was very shallow near the edge.

Lake Ruataniwha is a man made lake.
It stores water for the Waitaki Power Scheme.

The lagoon was designed for leisure activities.
On the other side of the lagoon are the Rowing Lanes.

Lunch time under the trees.

Thank goodness for the Portaloo!

The swings were very busy.
There were cones to stop children walking in front of them

After lunch the Secondary students took Room 7 children out on the lake in the schools' Canadian canoes.
Summer took Kittie and Jasper out on the lake.

Mr Frost and Ms Arkless were on safety patrol.

The Year 5 and 6 children went out in the school kayaks.
Everyone in a canoe or a kayak had to wear life-jackets.

We loved playing in the water.
Robert said that it was the best day ever at school!

James had fun with a rake.

It began to rain so we left the lake in peace for the taniwha.
