Making Bread and The Little Red Hen
As part of our study of Fungi,
we have been studying yeast with Ms McNeill.
Today we used yeast to bake bread.
We borrowed Sarah's breadmaker.
First we got the ingredients and made a bread dough.
We put it in the breadmaker.
What next?
"The bread looked floury.
Then the bread looked gooey.
Then it looked like a white ball.
Then it grew into a BIG loaf of bread.
Thank you, yeast!"

Then it grew into a BIG loaf of bread.

Then we read a large shared book called,
"The Little Red Hen."
It is about a hen who grows some wheat, harvests the wheat,
and makes some bread.
It is a traditional story.
The following Little Red Hen stories
were found on Youtube.
Some stories have a dog, a cat and a rat.
Some stories have a dog, a cat and a goose.
(Fungi contain no chlorophyll. They are simple plants that include the yeast, molds, rusts, smuts, and mushrooms.)

Mrs Sheridan.
Today was a sad day for Twizel Area School.
It was the last official day for our school chaplain Mrs Marion Sheridan, as she has now retired.
She has been the school chaplain for the last 10 years, but her ties to the school go back much further than that as her eight children all went to either Twizel Primary School, Twizel High School, or when they combined, to Twizel Area School. Now several of her grandchildren attend our school. Mrs Sheridan has been a mentor to many children and has been there to offer a friendly smile or a ready ear to children whose problems have been both big and small. She has also been there to offer support in the classroom and has always been ready and willing to lend a helping hand.
Marion is also known for the book she published about Twizel, called "The Dam Dwellers."
Marion, you will be missed for many a day to come.
(Photo to come.)

Sunset on 24th May.
Last night there was a colourful sunset.
The temperature got warm and at 10pm it was 14 degrees.
A big change from the minus temperatures we had on the weekend.

Exciting Autumn Seeds
Some of our radishes went to seed.
This is one of the seed heads.
We will open a seed pod to look inside.
We wonder what we will find?
The Autumn leaves are covering our garden now.
Washing your hands kills GERMS!!!
Linda Merrilees,
our Public Health Nurse,
came to our class and talked about
germs and bugs.
We found that the proper name for germs
is bacteria.
is bacteria.
Bacteria have strange names!
Here are some nasty bacteria.
If you wash your hands, you can kill most germs.
First, wet your hands.
Put some soap on them.
Rub your hands together.
Rub the soap on the backs of your hands and make them soapy.

Two weeks ago we collected Autumn leaves and we laminated them. |
They have turned brown now.
We love looking at them

Apple Fractions
We got one apple
Then we cut it into 2.
We made halves.
Then we got another apple and cut it into 4.
We made quarters.
We made eighths, sixteenths,
thirds and sixths.
Then we ate all of the apples.
There are 14 children in the class and 2 adults.
We all ate one sixteenth of an apple and that was
the end of that apple!

What else do you think we added to the test tube?
Then we put a balloon over the test tube.
This is what happened to the balloons.

Room 4's Maths Display Showing Ways To Measure Time
Room 4 children have been studying time for Maths.
These models are on display outside their classroom.
They have constructed different models to measure time.
They had to time their models to see how long they took.
They did several tests to get an accurate time.
One model was timed at taking 2 seconds.
Another one took 6 minutes.
Some of the smaller models were
demonstrated at Assembly.
