Matariki

We have been learning about Matariki
with Mrs Powell.
Matariki is the Maori New Year.
In June the star formation known as Matariki
(the Pleiades) officially appears in the sky.
There are seven stars that can be seen in the early dawn.

We decorated wine biscuits. We made dark chocolate icing and then put seven little silver balls (cachous)
on top for the stars.

We are going to eat them at our party on Thursday.

Pancakes, Pancakes

Ms McNeill read us a book about pancakes, so we made pancakes and tried to flip them. (We didn't eat the two that we worked with, because they ended up on the floor a lot of times!

We are in the Event Centre.
We are trying to copy the Year 6 students.
Touch those boots!
Go! Go! Go, Max and Jack!

"I love Jump Jam,"
said Luke.

said Joshua.

"Like this?"
said Ariana,
Let's dance!

Jump Jam is cool!!!

Here are the words for "The Witch Doctor."

The Farms

said the boys.

Daffodils

Our bulbs are growing.

Colour Wheel

We have been learning about mixing paints.
We painted the colour wheel with Mrs Powell.

The colour wheel has the three primary colours in it.
They are red, blue and yellow.

We then mixed red and blue to make purple.
We mixed red and yellow to make orange.
We mixed yellow and blue to make green.

More Patterns

Wow Kittie.
This is a very complicated pattern.
Well done!
Three patterns.

Great work,
Danielle
This pattern looks like
a lot of exclamation marks.

Two repeating designs.

This could be tricky to copy!

Some nice symmetry happening here.

Algebra

In Maths we have been creating and continuing simple sequential patterns.

To gain an understanding of algebra, students must be introduced to the concepts of patterns, relationships, variables, expressions, unknowns, equations and graphs in a wide variety of contexts.

The head of Canterbury Tourism is congratulating those who have campaigned to make the Mackenzie Basin a worldwide attraction spot for stargazers.
Visitor numbers are expected to double after the announcement the area's been named one of four International Dark Sky Reserves.
Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter says it can only be a positive thing for the region.
"It's already brought a lot of extra visitors into the Mackenzie region, both for stargazing at Tekapo and also Mt Cook and that's just likely to increase quite significantly."
Mr Hunter says bringing more stargazers to the area will mean more visitor nights spent here, bringing benefits to
local accommodation providers.

Mandarin Maths

First we got a piece of paper and put our name on it.
Then we all got a mandarin and peeled it.
We separated each segment.
Then we counted how many segments there were.
Sarah and Ms Douglas got a mandarin too.

The least number of segments was eight. (8)
The most number of segments was twelve. (12)
We think this is how many mandarin segments we got but maybe some got eaten before we could count them all!
One person got 8 segment.
One person got 9 segments
Seven people got 10 segments.
One person got 11 segments.
Six people got 12 segments.
After we counted them, we were allowed to eat them.  Hmm-mmm.

We are learning that we can divide one whole object into smaller parts. We like apple and mandarin maths.
