The head of Canterbury Tourism is congratulating those who have campaigned to make the Mackenzie Basin a worldwide attraction spot for stargazers.
Visitor numbers are expected to double after the announcement the area's been named one of four International Dark Sky Reserves.
Canterbury Tourism CEO Tim Hunter says it can only be a positive thing for the region.
"It's already brought a lot of extra visitors into the Mackenzie region, both for stargazing at Tekapo and also Mt Cook and that's just likely to increase quite significantly."
Mr Hunter says bringing more stargazers to the area will mean more visitor nights spent here, bringing benefits to
local accommodation providers.
